THE SITUATION
Engineers at a tube train maintenance depot were having an issue with corrosion inside valance cover plates above door operating gears. Extensive corrosion was being found when rivets were removed along with the cover plates, for maintenance to the train door workings.
The customer needed a solution that would:
– Remove existing and help prevent future corrosion
– Seal and stop all water ingress
– Be easy to apply
– Speed up the current current process which takes 7 hours start-to-finish per car
– Meet stringent health & safety requirements
THE SOLUTION
The customer’s key account manager within the dedicated HAYLEY DEXIS | Rail team contacted the technical specialist at Henkel, for assistance in providing the best solution for the customer.
The solution consisted of
– A wire brush and LOCTITE SF 7063 for preparing the surface
– BONDERITE C-NE 90200 and BONDERITE C-MC 1204 to neutralise the existing corrosion
– BONDERITE M-NT 1455 wipes, to aid in the prevention of future corrosion
– LOCTITE 243 blue threadlocking adhesive applied under the heads of rivets to provide a durable seal that prevents water ingress under the valance cover plates

THE RESULT
The solution has significantly reduced the time required to carry-out the task effectively, for the 7-man maintenance team. What formerly took 7 hours per car, now takes around 20 minutes to complete.
Taking into account the customers’ labour costs of £55 per hour, the solution will save an eye-catching £848,000 over the course of a 12-month period.
