The Situation
A major gas turbine manufacturer required a safer and more ergonomic solution for an existing machine. The existing arrangement presented manual handling challenges and operator safety concerns, while also needing to perform reliably under offset loading conditions in a demanding manufacturing environment.
Working alongside the HAYLEY DEXIS Scunthorpe branch, the WMH technical team was invited to assess the application and develop a practical linear motion solution that would improve safety, usability, and long-term reliability.
The Solution
Following a joint site visit, the team evaluated the application, load conditions, and operational requirements before specifying a bespoke linear motion system.
A Hiwin WE Series (Wide Type) linear guideway was selected to provide the rigidity and moment load capacity required for the offset loading conditions. To maximise service life, additional sealing kits were specified to protect the guide system from contamination within the manufacturing environment.
To further enhance operator safety, a Zimmer linear rail clamp was incorporated to provide a positive locking function, ensuring the system remained securely positioned when stationary. The complete solution was designed to meet both the customer’s technical requirements and project budget.
The Result
The new linear motion system delivered a safer, more ergonomic solution that improved operator interaction while providing the strength and stability required for the application. By combining technical expertise with practical engineering knowledge, WMH delivered a bespoke solution that met the customer’s operational objectives and identified opportunities for similar improvements across additional machinery.
