The Project
A Train Maintenance Depot required a vending solution for their site that mirrored the successful setup already in place at their other facility. The goal was to provide controlled access to three key categories of consumables: PPE, Paint Preparation materials, and Miscellaneous Consumables. Initially, the intention was to integrate new vending equipment with the existing Edge and locker systems already on site. The solution needed to maintain product consistency with their existing site while accommodating a small number of site‑specific exceptions.
The Solution
Working collaboratively with the customer, the HAYLEY DEXIS smartVEND project team evaluated the operational impact of running new vending machines alongside the existing Edge and locker units. Through discussions with the customer and further assessment of workflow and user experience, it became clear that a hybrid setup would introduce unnecessary complexity. The recommended approach was to fully replace the existing Edge and locker system with the new vending machines. This provided a unified, modernised solution capable of handling all three product categories while simplifying management and replenishment.
The Result
By transitioning entirely to the new vending machines, the customer has achieved a cleaner, more efficient, and more consistent system across both the Train Maintenance Depot in this project and their existing site. The unified setup reduced operational friction, improved product control, and ensured that staff could access PPE, paint prep materials, and consumables through a single, streamlined interface. The decision to replace rather than integrate ultimately delivered a more reliable and future‑proof vending solution for the Train Maintenance Depot.
