
The Situation
A Midlands-based OEM had a large order of one hundred hydraulic power packs for a customer in Saudi Arabia. The OEM planned to use their new DOOSAN NHP 5000 CNC machining centre to create the manifolds needed. The HAYLEY DEXIS team in Birmingham were contacted to help with sourcing a five-stepped special high-tolerance HSS tool that required custom manufacturing.
The Solution
The HAYLEY DEXIS Sales Manager arranged a joint visit to site with Gühring, a manufacturer of drilling and cutting tools. Parameters needed to create the bespoke tool were gathered, and drawings were submitted to the customer for approval. Once approved, engineers at Gühring set to work on the custom HSS reamer product that would be used to allow connection into the matrix of pipes within the manifolds. A tight timeframe was imposed by the OEM as their customer was waiting on their delivery of finished hydraulic power packs. Therefore, both speed and accuracy were key to the success of this project.

The Result
The challenge of achieving accuracy within a challenging timeframe was met on this project, with the tool designed, approved, produced and commissioned in just six days. The customer was satisfied that their strict requirement for the tool to create five-stepped close-toleranced bores and angles within the manifold was accomplished. The rapid turnaround of this turn-key solution meant that the OEM was able to facilitate dispatch of the completed products to their customer, within their expectations. Following the success of this project, the OEM is looking to work with HAYLEY DEXIS and Gühring again on the tooling involved in future manifold prototypes on the horizon.
