The Situation
A concrete plant in the South East of Scotland was aware of a gearbox onsite that was due to fail. Long-standing gear specialists and fellow DEXIS Europe members, Lamond & Murray, were contacted and a joint-visit with the customer’s local HAYLEY DEXIS branch in Falkirk was organised. Just under three days later, the gearbox suffered a catastrophic breakdown. It was clear that waiting for OEM spares would not be a viable option, due to lengthy leadtimes being quoted.
The Solution
Lamond & Murray took delivery of the failed gearbox first thing the very next day, and scheduled the unit for an immediate strip and inspection. To achieve this, less critical jobs currently in progress were paused. Following inspection, a near-identical second-hand gearbox was quickly sourced and stripped for parts, so that engineers at Lamond & Murray could make one good unit from two.
A new set of bearings and seals was specified and sourced within Hayley stockholding and delivered directly to a Lamond & Murray Directors’ home address at 1am on the following morning (Monday), in order for the rebuild to begin in earnest. Additional shifts were completed in the workshop to ensure a rapid turnaround.
"THE WORK WAS COMPLETED LARGELY OUT OF HOURS BY LAMOND & MURRAY ENGINEERS."
The Result
Thanks to the round-the clock work of the Lamond & Murray team, and the support of HAYLEY DEXIS branches, the cement plant had a fully-refurbished gearbox in-place of the failed unit by the Wednesday lunchtime.
This was just two-and-a-half days after it had first landed in the workshop. The downtime period inflicted by the gearbox failure would have been far greater if the customer had waited for spares or a replacement from the OEM. The work completed largely out-of-hours by Lamond & Murray engineers minimised downtime, reducing lost revenue for the cement-producing customer.
