The Situation
The section mill of a South Wales-based steelworks has a Pomini lubrication system installed which continuously circulates 7000 litres of gear oil to lubricate bearings and gears within the site’s machinery. The process requires water cooling due to the high temperatures present. Water ingress and contamination were issues that arose from the water cooling process, with this resulting in shortened oil change intervals, increased wear on rotating equipment and more unplanned downtime.
The Solution
The local HAYLEY DEXIS team in Newport were contacted for assistance. Following a recent success with implementing a SKF RecondOil Box at another customer’s site. it was arranged for representatives from HAYLEY DEXIS and SKF to visit the section mill and introduce it to the steelworks. The SKF RecondOil Box is an enhanced depth filtration system that incorporates RecondOil’s patented Double Separation Technology (DST), removing the smallest contaminants to enable the circular re-use of the lubricant. An order was placed and an installation date diarised for the following week.
"AN ESTIMATED ANNUAL COST-SAVING OF £15,000 WILL BE ACHIEVED."
The Result
The SKF RecondOil Box has now been implemented and is extending lubricant life by maintaining its quality for longer, with contamination now a thing of the past. This is resulting in more reliable machinery and less downtime. It’s currently estimated that the customer will save £15,000 in oil over the course of twelve months, as well as around £5,000 in downtime-related costs. Thanks to the SKF RecondOil Box, the customer can also expect to reduce their carbon emissions by an estimated 20,300kg per year.
